Screensavers, More For Appeal Than Saving Screens.

I know you know what screensavers are. Yeah I'm talking about those animated sequences that come up after your monitor has been left sitting for a specified amount of time. Any thing from different colors and designs that flash on and off the screen to slideshows of professional pictures or your own personal shots, to words and phrases, to animations like aquariums or video games. So why do they exist?

I know you know what screensavers are. Yeah I'm talking about those animated sequences that come up after your monitor has been left sitting for a specified amount of time. Any thing from different colors and designs that flash on and off the screen to slideshows of professional pictures or your own personal shots, to words and phrases, to animations like aquariums or video games. So why do they exist?

The original purpose for screensavers was more noble than purely entertainment. The fear and it was legitimate back then was the images if left static on the screen for too long would actually burn out or otherwise permanently change the actual physical units on the screen that the pixels corresponded to. Kind of like when you stare a something bright for too long and then wherever you look for the next little while you have an image, usually a different color "burned" into your field of vision. Its really annoying and actually ruined monitors. The idea was that if you had some sort of program that kept the images and background moving so that pixels weren't left static on the screen you could avoid these image burns.

And it worked great while it was an issue, which was for as long as screens were produced like they used to be. You see they changed the physical characteristic of the individual cells on the screen to work with less energy. This reduction in the amount of energy necessary to light up any one particular pixel point minimized the risk that it would burn out permanently, thus getting rid of the need for screensavers.

But they didn't leave did they? No they have become a permanent fixture on all standard home and office personal computers. Now they are more novelty that useful application. And boy are some of them unique! If you haven't done anything more than use the typical screen savers that are offered with the windows operating system that comes with your computer, and because you haven't seen any other than that you might be wondering what I mean when I say that I am amazed at the creativity that goes into some of them.

Well if this is the case than I encourage you to do a search for screensavers and I think you will be amazed (like I am) at how many there are and how much work people have put into making some very complicated screensavers. I think you will also have a hard time believing as I did that there are some very cool and professionally done screen savers out there that you can download for free! Go ahead, have some fun (and be careful, there is lots of smut out there too) searching for a little screensaver art for you PC.

Screensavers are a fun way to add some personalization to a computer screen. Maybe it’s an image of the perfect vacation or perhaps a family photo to help someone feel close to their family even if they are miles away. In addition, some people use a photo of their favorite pet as a screensaver or other photo that reminds them of something that has a special place in their heart.

There are many ways to get screensavers, including purchasing various images on a CD-Rom. Every new computer is programmed with a few choices, but below are a few additional ways of getting the perfect image for your screensavers...

- Download photos from your digital camera.

- Scan photos in using your computer scanner.

- Access images saved on a CD-Rom or Photo Disc.

- Download images from the internet (with permission) or e-mail attachments.

- Access still images from a digital video camera.

If you want to use your own personal pictures as screensavers, it’s as easy as 1-2-3. First of all, make sure that you have two or more pictures in a folder on your computer. You can upload pictures from a digital camera or scanner, or copy them from the internet or an e-mail attachment. Using the Control Panel on your computer, click on the ‘Display’ tab. Next, click on the screensavers tab and then click on settings in order to locate the folder containing your pictures.

To see your screensavers in action, click on the ‘Start’ tab in the bottom left hand corner of your computer screen, then click on ‘Control Panel.’ Once there, click on ‘Appearance and Themes’ followed by ‘Display.’ Once you specify which screensavers you want to use, it will automatically start when your computer is idle for the number of minutes specified in the ‘Wait’ command. If you would like to preview your screensavers, click on ‘Preview’ to see how they will appear on your monitor. When you are ready to end the preview, simply move your mouse or press a key on your keyboard.

Screensavers are an excellent way to save on your computer screen and also your energy bill. When the computer is idle for a certain amount of time, the screensavers are designed to pop up while the computer remains out of use. When you wish to rejoin the computer, it’s simple to press a key or move the mouse and the screen that you left will reappear for you to continue work.

Are free screensavers safe to install?

There are many websites online that offer free screensavers for download. The question remains though, are those screensavers safe? By downloading and installing these so called free screensavers will any harm come to your computer? This is a legitimate concern, which needs to be addressed before any user even thinks about installing a free screensaver.

There are several malicious programs which can come bundled with a free screensaver. These will mainly be viruses, spyware, adware, and toolbars. There are a few variations within these programs, but in the main they are considered undesirable, unless the user specifically requests them. And out of that list, the only one that you would even consider installing would be a friendly toolbar. But more on that later.

Below is a brief run-down of each type of malicious programs that you would want to avoid:

Viruses: These must be avoided at all costs as they can detrimentally harm your computer, often to the point of losing unrecoverable data. If you are afraid of being infected with viruses, only download software from trusted sites where programs are verified and tested, such as at Download.com. Download.com also host their own files, which means that software cannot be altered at a later date to include any viruses.

Spyware: These are programs which are used to unethically track and spy on your internet online activities. The data can then be sold to advertisers or used to change your browser and computer functions. Spyware is one of the worst type of bundled software, and can be difficult to remove.

Adware: Adware is a little less scary than spyware, though no less annoying to the average computer user. Adware programs will continually display popups and unwanted adverts while you are browsing. Sometimes you may not even realise that you have adware unless you notice an excessive amount of popups during your normal surfing (where there were no popups before).

Toolbars: Finally we have toolbars, which is a mixed basket. Some toolbars are actually quite useful, such as the Google Toolbar, or some that offer increased entertainment experience like the StumbleUpon toolbar. Having said that, there are other toolbars which are used as a means of displaying ads and are hard to uninstall. Some of these unwanted toolbars come bundled with free screensavers or software, often from some so called ‘big name’ companies.

It is extremely important that you do your research before you download screensavers. Read the Terms of Service, and Conditions of Use on the websites, as companies are required by law to inform users what they would be installing.

Make sure you read the fine print. Not just what is on the download page. Sometimes they will say ‘No spyware’, but they do not mention anything about adware. Are you prepared to put up with some (or a lot) of advertisements for a free screensaver? Most people certainly should not.

A Guide To Free Screensavers

Saturday, April 30, 2011

There are millions of Screensavers available on the Internet. Almost all of these can be downloaded and installed easily. These are usually categorized according to themes. Nature lovers can choose picturesque locations. Fish lovers can choose from different kinds of aquariums with multi-colored fish that are swishing through colored water. Those who really like adventure sports or aircraft can choose from a wide array of moving images and clips of death-defying stunts. Screensavers can also be slide shows that have various pictures of movie celebrities, sportspersons and politicians.

However, some precautions need to be taken before downloading Screensavers. The most important one is that Screensavers must be downloaded from trusted sites. It’s also always a good idea to scan Screensavers for viruses and other potentially dangerous elements, such as spyware and adware. If an anti-virus is already installed on the system, a right click enables a menu which provides for a ‘scan with…’ option. This option can be selected and left-clicked to check the selected download before double-clicking it and installing it.

Sometimes Screensavers are extremely graphic-intensive. This means that they contain so many graphics that they are huge files. Huge files take a lot of space on the computer when they run, and make the computer work so much harder and so much faster than normal that the computer freezes. Then the computer needs to be restarted and all the unsaved information on the computer -- such as open files that were being worked on before the Screensaver was activated – is lost.

Some Screensavers also make the hard drive of the computer crash, causing irretrievable data loss. Therefore, it is important for users to download Screensavers that are compatible with the configuration of their computers. This means that the speed of the processor in the computer, and the free space on it, should be sufficient for the Screensaver to be downloaded, installed and run.

Many users like to create their own Screensavers, often with the visuals and audio of their choice. Some software applications facilitate this. Out of these, some can be freely downloaded from the Internet. However, these should be downloaded only from trusted sites, and should be supported by the configuration of the user’s computer. Once downloaded, these should also be scanned for viruses and other common infections. When installed, these programs enable the user to combine images, video clips and audio clips to create a personalized Screensaver, sometimes even for circulation amongst friends and family.
